The Gosainkunda Trek is a popular and breathtaking trekking route located in the Langtang region of Nepal. The highlight of the trek is the holy pilgrimage site of Gosainkunda Lake, which is considered sacred by both Hindus and Buddhists. Gosainkunda Lake holds great religious significance for Hindus, particularly as it is associated with an intriguing story involving Lord Shiva, one of the major deities in Hindu mythology. According to Hindu scriptures, the story goes as follows:
Once upon a time, there was a great cosmic battle between the gods and demons. During this fierce battle, both the gods and the demons were trying to obtain the elixir of immortality, known as “amrita,” which would grant them eternal life and power.
In order to get elixir they started doing churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) During “Manthan” they started obtaining various substances from the Ocean. Among that, they attain lethal posion known as ‘halahala’. This poison was so powerful that terrified the gods, demons and could destory all of creation. Seeing this, Lord Shiva god of destroyer (Mahakaal) consumed the poison in order to protect three world.
This poision gave him blue hue to his throat, offering him the epithet ‘Neelakanta’ in sankrit. Therefore, lord shiva couldn’t resist the buring of the poison inside him and went to the mountian place which is now know as Goshainkunda lake. He ussed his trident (trishul) for snow cold water channel in the ground, allwoing the water to form lake and lie-down like corps. After this, every thing fall into peace.
Due to this assocciation with this mythological story, Gosainkunda lake has become a pilgrimage site
for Hindusand Buddhist.

After an early breakfast, embark on a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Dhunche, the starting point of the trek. The drive offers panoramic views of the countryside and takes around 6-7 hours. Overnight stay in Dhunche.
Begin your trek from Dhunche, following the trail that gradually ascends through lush forests of rhododendron and oak trees. Pass through small villages and enjoy the stunning views of the Langtang mountain range. Reach Chandanbari and rest for the night.
Today, you will trek to the sacred Gosainkunda Lake. The trail climbs steeply, offering breathtaking views of the Himalayas. Along the way, you will pass several smaller lakes and enjoy the serenity of the alpine landscape. Reach Gosainkunda, where you can explore the surroundings and witness the religious significance of the lake. Overnight stay near Gosainkunda.
Today is a challenging day as you cross the high-altitude Laurebina Pass. The trail takes you through rocky terrain and offers panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks. After reaching the pass, descend towards Ghopte and rest for the night.
Continue your trek through dense forests and lush valleys. The trail offers stunning views of the Langtang and Rolwaling mountain ranges. Reach Tharepati, a beautiful village with panoramic views of the Himalayas. Overnight stay in Tharepati.
On the final day of the trek, descend through rhododendron forests and pass charming villages. Reach Sundarijal and catch a private vehicle back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and rest. In the evening, you can explore the vibrant streets of Kathmandu and indulge in some souvenir shopping. Overnight stay in Kathmandu.
